I Am On a Roll! Not Really

I was on the computers at school and decided to update my blog. The Who’s Laura (used to be Me) page finally got edited. I’m so happy for myself. Yeah, it isn’t very good but at least I did something with my time.

A couple of days ago, I was staring at my mom talking to herself (I hope) in sign language. I wondered what it was like how deaf people think in their heads. I am explaining this best as I can. I realized that we think in our heads its in our language. Like, what we hear (as in talking) we use to think in our heads. Like if you are reading this now, it is like you are actually saying it but in your head.

The deaf people, who were deaf since birth, can’t hear except feel vibrations [ex. I have to stomp to get my mother's attention in the house]. It is such a strange thing. I’ll probably see if they have any information already about that.

So there you go, something random from me. I would type more but I am about to change classes in 5 minutes. I plan to blog again soon.

<3 Laura

  1. I sometimes update when i am at school =] I think deaf people are very used to it, i think its a bit different if you were not born with it.

    Nice website =]

  2. I often wonder what it would like to go without one of my senses, and if I had to lose one, which one I would pick. I think the the sense of smell would be the one I would choose to lose if I had to.

I never really thought of how a deaf person ‘thinks’ in their mind, or to look at it another way, how a blind person would ‘picture’ something.

It’s a pretty interesting thought, and I’m very lucky to be in a position to not know.

Happy Christmas and New Year! :)

  3. I post a new blog entry whenever I get the chance during my breaks at uni. :)

That is a good question actually. Do deaf people hear their own voices in their heads when they read? I’d imagine they might, or perhaps see some signs from their sign language in their head..

  4. That’s a good question. Maybe the voices are made up, using different voices to inact different situations. Either that, or imagine some sort of vibrations to read to themselves, if that makes any sense. xD

  5. that’s something i’ve always wondered too, of how different people think. like, how would babies think because they don’t know words, yet a couple of my friends have memories of when they were babies. and if people speak two languages quite fluently, which one is the one they think in. we (my friends and i) talked about all of this late one drunken night lol. i remember it still, it was an hour of intense discussion that wore us out in the end, and we ended up being exhausted and going to bed lol :P

  6. Sign language is like my 3rd language because we had to learn it at school for no reason at all. I do better sign language than speak Dutch.

    Anyway MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

  7. I’ve thought about people thinking in other languages before, but I don’t think I’ve ever thought about how deaf people think. It’s interesting though…

I’m glad you got some work done in your class. :)

  8. Hmm. I’ve thought about what blind people think is colour, cause we did a unit on Helen Keller in English. But I’ve never actually considered how deaf people think. Maybe they think in sign language? Because if you think about it, they don’t know what sound is, even if you try your best to explain it to them. They’ll never actually experience it.

Arrrghh I’m confused. Hah. Merry Christmas.

  9. I’ve never thought of how deaf people think, but it would be interesting to find out, I’m sure!

  10. I bet you could find tons of information on how deaf people think - since they can write and sign to explain things, still. I guess I never imagined somebody signing to themselves since they can visualize it mentally. I’m sure it happens, though, since sometimes we talk to ourselves. :)

  11. I’ve often wondered the same; how do deaf people “hear” their thoughts? Do they sense vibrations they associate with certain feelings? Or do they see sign language? It’s fascinating, really…

  12. Aw yes, it’s so sad to lose one of your senses. :| But it’s interesting to know how deaf people think. :D
